Gleadless Primary School

We are Determined, We are a Team, We are Respectful, We have Self Belief, We Care, We Have a Voice.

Nursery New Starters!

Foundation Stage and Application for Nursery

The Foundation Stage is a happy and thriving environment for your child to learn and grow. Colleagues are warm and welcoming. The school achieved the Charter for Quality in 2018 and 2019 and provides high standards in teaching and learning. Colleagues are highly skilled in understanding the needs of learners. Please do come and visit and see for yourself!

At Gleadless Primary School we want all our children to aim high, our provision truly reflects our vision for learning and is carefully planned to offer rich, meaningful and joyful experiences for all children.  At Gleadless, our intention is for all children to be determined and learn through a mix of dynamic, hands on learning experiences supported and encouraged to work as a team by highly skilled and caring adults. The curriculum is delivered through many different experiences, the resources and the interactions that are built into play and occasions of ‘direct teaching’ throughout the day, every day. Adults model daily how we are respectful and show how we care for each other and our learning environment. The learning environment is linked to the how and what children learn and is valued as a ‘teacher’.

The impact of our curriculum is that the needs of all children are met within the environment of high quality first teaching supported by targeted interventions where appropriate.  In this way, the curriculum provides all children with positive outcomes in terms of their learning and prepares children for the next phase in school. Through all our core values we teach our children to be thoughtful, believe in themselves, belong to our school and wider community and importantly become anything they wish to be!

Our Work
In Nursery, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The seven areas of learning and development that shape our curriculum are:

  • Personal, social and emotional development (PSED)
  • Mathematics (M)
  • Communication and language (CL)
  • Literacy (L)
  • Understanding of the world (UW)
  • Physical development (PD)
  • Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

Maths and Literacy in Nursery
Lots of fun comes from playing games, sharing books and singing nursery rhymes! This means that maths and literacy learning can take place at the same time. It is important that young children are aware of numbers and sounds from an early age, and that they can have fun with them in a relaxed atmosphere. In Nursery, we like to link these two areas to the wider world and talk to the children about numbers and sounds in the environment. It is so important to develop curiosity and good observational skills which will transfer to other areas of life!

Our day
In our
Nursery, we include lots of regular activities during the day to help children get used to Nursery and know what to expect. Activities include:

  • Meet and Greet!
  • Group Time
  • Communication Snack Time
  • Continuous Provision, including free-flow outdoor learning
  • Directed Tasks
