Staff Development

At Gleadless, we value each and every member of our staff team. We know that in order to be the adults our children and community need, it is important that we all keep learning and developing, no matter our role and regardless of how long we have been in the profession. Since January 2021, the school has worked in partnership with the Teacher Development Trust to make sure our staff development offer is as good as possible. We were delighted in Summer 2021 and Summer 2022 to achieve the Silver award for staff development which recognises our strong approach to this area of school life.

Here is what the TDT says about CPD at Gleadless:

• Professional learning is highly valued throughout the school and there is a strong commitment to improving the quality of
teaching and learning.
• A collegial and supportive environment for adult learning is driving school improvement forwards.
• Staff recognise that the school works hard to help adults learn in school.
• Staff feel that school CPD is driven by pupil need, and that their own CPD is targeted at supporting specific pupils.
• External and internal expertise is carefully planned to support each other.
• The school has ongoing, mutually benefiting relationships with local schools.
• Evidence behind approaches of external expertise is considered when choosing expertise

As well as an excellent internal offer of staff training and development opportunities, we also make a strong commitment at Gleadless to developing the teachers, middle leaders and senior leaders of the future. As of the academic year 2025/26, we have:

  • Three Early Career Teachers who are learning to become the best teachers they can be
  • Two senior leaders who have recently undertaken - or are currently undertaking - the National Professional Qualification for Headship
  • Two senior leaders completing the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership
  • Two aspiring leaders completing the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership
  • A SENDCo completing the National Professional Qualification for SEND

Working collaboratively with schools and colleagues in our community is an integral part of our staff development ethos. Gleadless works closely with the other 16 schools in Sheffield South East Learning Partnership, drawing on the skills and experiences of their staff teams. Furthermore, this provides a multitude of networking and development opportunities for our staff, including:

  • Literacy network
  • Maths network
  • Headteacher network group
  • Deputy and Assistant Head network group
  • EYFS network group, led by external consultant Angela Lant
  • Shared 'deep dive' opportunities across schools to support one another with school improvement, led by external consultant David Connor
  • Writing moderation in every year group across the primary phase
  • Shared CPD focused on improving attendance led by Wayne Harris from Inclusive Attendance
  • Shared CPD for subject leaders focused on curriculum development, led by Nick Whittaker
  • Shared CPD focused on developing effective Pupil Premium strategies, led by Marc Rowland
