Careers Education
In line with our HUGG (Huge Unbelievably Great Goal):
"Our school prepares children for success, enabling them to make aspirational choices for themselves and positive contributions to the wider world."
We believe that our offer for pupils should extend beyond the academic, and should help them to grow into well-rounded citizens who have the skills, knowledge and confidence to take the next step in their educational and vocational lives. We endeavour to open doors for children and their families, helping them to see their place in the wider world and to recognise the many contributions that they can make.
Our Curriculum
- Our PSHE/RSHE curriculum helps children to explore who they are and who they can be through the key strands 'Being Me in My World' and' Dreams and Goals'
- Our bespoke Geography and History curriculum helps to give children a greater understanding of their local area and community, celebrating the people, places and events that have made our community what it is today
Transition and Careers Support - links with secondary schools
We work closely with our local secondary schools to help to prepare children for their next step in education. Through the SSELP 'Early Risers' programme, our children spend time in their new schools before leaving primary school at the end of Year 6.
Furthermore, each year we engage in the local Careers programme, in collaboration with Sheffield Springs Academy. This involves our Year 5 and Year 6 children participating in Careers-based workshops and events at their local secondary school. These help to expose children to different career pathways beyond education and to begin to explore the characteristics that help us to be successful in the workplace.
During National Careers Week, the Careers Advisor from Sheffield Springs Academy also leads assemblies for children in KS1 and KS2 to further strengthen these links.
Careers Day
In 2025, we launched our annual 'Careers Day' event at Gleadless. This event was planned using the Career Development Framework and involved:
- Children from Nursery to Year 6 taking part in a range of activities linked to the 'Create Opportunities' strand of the Career Development Framework
- A range of professionals from different industries from our local community came into school to present to children in every class and to lead workshops about their different career pathways
- Children shared with their peers the different jobs and careers of people within their families
- Children came to school dressed as something they would like to be when they are older
- Children carried out mini-enterprise tasks in teams, where they worked together towards a shared goal and presented their final outcome to their peers
This event was a great success and will now take place annually, each year focusing on a different strand of the Career Development Framework (see below).
