Sport and Physical Health
Gleadless is an active school with children engaging actively in play and in sporting events both in and out of school. Both through and beyond our curriculum offer and alongside our partnership with LINKS sports, we are able to engage pupils in a wide range of sporting opportunities, events and inter-school competitions across a range of sports.
Read below to explore some of the ways we achieve this.
Active Playtimes
Our sports leader supports staff and our student playground leaders to run activities at break and lunchtime to encourage children to develop their team and sports skills in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.
This includes promoting 'positive playtimes' by engaging children in planned and structured games and activities to support physical activity as well as good behaviour during social times.
Clubs and Sporting Opportunities
Providing wider sporting opportunities for our children is an important part of what we do at Gleadless. Our sports leader partners with LINKS sports partnership to engage pupils in inter-school competitions and opportunities across a range of sports.
In the academic year 2024/25, 100% of children from Reception to Year 6 participated in a sporting event, activity, club or competition which was offered outside of our usual PE curriculum offer.
These included:
- Field Bowling
- Dance Lessons
- Cycling Lessons
- Fitness Club
- Tag Rugby
- Ten Pin Bowling (Panathlon Challenge)
- Swimming
- EIS sports day events alongside Sheffield schools
- Y5 Bikeability
- Girls Football Leadership Event
- Boys and Girls Football Club
- Mixed boys and girls Athletics
We are incredibly proud of this achievement and the range of wider activities and competitions that children are able to access.
Promoting Girls in Sport
The Daily Mile
The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running, wheeling or walking – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends.
At Gleadless, children participate in the 'Daily Mile' 3 times per week. This encourages children to get their bodies moving, which can have a range of benefits.
